VT-100 Alternatives: Part 3 - VT-110

VT-110 runs from South Royalton north to Barre and is perhaps the most intriguing of the three alternatives to VT-100 (VT-14, VT-12 and VT-110). One-ten has a feel that is more remote, more twisty and more country  – if that’s possible.

VT-110 has two side trips that are worth exploring.

Strafford Rd in Tunbridge, immediately before the new bridge, is a winding, side road that leads to Strafford and Route 132 in South Strafford. This side loop has pavement that varies from great to god-awful, so be prepared for a few bumps. In return, you'll get views, variety and a sense of adventure. At the Sharon end of Route 132 there is a set of good twisties, if you can get them without traffic. Route 132 winds along a nice river and has frequent riverside pull-offs to wait out any cars you might encounter.

If you take Stafford Rd you can easily loop back into VT-110 and retrace your route back to Tunbridge.

Further north on VT-110, East Randolph Road (also known as Chelsea Mountain Rd on VT-14 side). makes a short cut-over to VT-14. East Randolph Road is an unexpected treat with good pavement, views, few cars and twisty flow. Sport oriented riders may want to round-trip this one, just for the of fun it.

North of East Randolph Rd is Chelsea VT. This small town has food, a nice town green and two general stores. Will’s Country Store is the better of the two – Chelsea Country Store has no public bathrooms. You will also find VT-113 in Chelsea.

North of Chelsea, VT-110 opens up until you come to Washington – another small Vermont town with a store and town green. If you’re making a loop with VT-14, you may want to consider the Lowery Rd cut-off before hitting Barre.

The Lowery Rd cut-off requires a 3 mile dirt road ride, so this isn’t for everyone (although the road quality was good during summer of 2009).

Lowery Rd is approximately .6 miles north of Washington on the left-hand side. Follow Lowery to Lambert Rd. Take a left onto Lambert and follow it until it intersects with McCafferty Rd. Take a right onto McCafferty and follow it to Robar Rd.

Robar merges into and becomes Graniteville Rd. At this point you are back on pavement. Follow Graniteville Rd until you reach Williamstown and VT-14. Don’t be surprised if these roads do not actually have signs. In Williamstown, you can choose to go south on VT-14 or take VT-64 over to VT-12.

Following the Lowery Rd cut-off will save you a slow, car filled ride through Barre on US-302. Harley riders may want to make the trek, however, to visit Wilkins Harley Davidson in Barre on VT-14.
